Suffolk Photography Course 2

Suffolk Photography Course 2

Suffolk Coast Photography Course

The coast of Suffolk has much to offer the photographer. Similar to Norfolk it’s a land of big skies, remote beaches, weathered boats and beach huts. There’s enough photographic potential to keep the beginner to photography and the more experienced photographer occupied for months. On this course we will visit at least three photographic locations which will hopefully give you an introduction to this inspiring landscape. The day begins with all course attendees meeting at a pre-arranged point.  Transport between the different photographic locations is not included but Steve is happy to car-share if you wish.  He will be driving a seven-seater people carrier.  However, if you prefer to use your own car throughout the day, the photographic locations are close to each other and this does not involve driving long distances.

MEETING POINT : Dunwich beach car park : Postcode IP17 3DE

The number of students on this photography course are limited to five participants to allow plenty of time for individual tuition, which makes this course suitable for all levels of ability. If you are a beginner the first thing we will do is get you away from automatic mode so you can begin to master your camera controls. If you have a greater level of knowledge we will look at gaining a higher level of technical skill.

During the morning we will be taking pictures of the famous beach huts, pier and waves crashing against the coastal sea defences. This is a good location for teaching the creative use of shutter speed, composition and creative use of focal length.

After photographing Southwold it’s time to change the pace and take in the peace and quiet of Dunwich Forest and Common. Dunwich Forest in particular is a great place for observing how available light affects the subject you are photographing.

Fishing Boat Photography from Steve Hedges in Aldebough Suffolk

It’s then on to Aldeburgh with its weathered fishing boats and beach art. Here, it’s all about close-up photography, selective depth of field and of course seascapes with those big skies.

Subjects covered during the workshop include:

• Camera controls and menus for both film and digital camera,
• Creative use of shutter speed and depth of field,
• White balance,
• Filter use, including “big stopper”,
• Focus modes for automatic focus,
• Fill flash,
• Exposure modes,
• Exposure histogram,
• Composition and the use of light and colour.

Each shoot is designed to boost your confidence so you have a much greater success rate when it comes to taking images with mood and impact. We will also discuss the impact that tide heights have on coastal photography along with the importance of sunrise and sunset positions with regard to dawn and dusk photography.

My courses have a flexible format allowing us to react to changing lighting conditions as well as giving me plenty of time to answer any questions you might have. I also strive to make each session as relaxed and fun as possible because I think we all learn more if we don’t feel under pressure.

You don’t need any special camera equipment for this day photography workshop. Your regular camera equipment will be fine. It’s the photographer’s eye that’s most important. A tripod would be useful, but don’t worry if you don’t have one because I have a number of tripods that I lend out to students.

Although this digital photography workshop is landscape-based all the skills you will learn are readily transferable to other subjects such as wildlife, sport, architectural and people photography. Each photo shoot will enable you to explore your digital camera and master skills that are useful for a wide range of subjects.

This course is limited to no more than five students per scheduled date as this way I can easily get around to everyone and personally tailor their learning experience

Once the workshop is finished all students are sent a full set of notes that cover all the subjects discussed during the course. I think it’s very important to have these notes to refer back to because it’s impossible to retain all the information we have been taught at the time. Also, I’m more than happy to give a critique of students’ images after the course. Just email a selection and I’ll give you an honest opinion.

Students’ testimonials from this course:

“Just wanted to pass on my thanks for a truly awesome workshop last Sunday and also to let you know that I successfully received all your comprehensive notes. All that remains now is to put your words of wisdom into practice. Thanks once again and I very much look forward to participating in one of your workshops again in the near future”. Steve Youens, Suffolk Coast course

“Just to say Sunday’s course was a very informative day – I learned a lot and at the same time had a great day, we had a good mix of people.  I am now more confident in the use of my camera and getting a better angle on shots. I will able to use manual, where appropriate, without taking “hours” to get a half decent picture. This reduces any feeling I am “holding up” others why I compose a shot. I think you may see me again on another “day out” at one of your courses – it is so useful just to have a day with like mind people engaging in our hobby and with an expert to guide and encourage us. You are an expert, but what I like about you is your natural ability to teach and encourage the group”. Chris Temple, Suffolk Coast course
