Dorset Photography Course

I spent a very enjoyable few days in Dorset leading a photography course last week. We were mainly focusing on Dorset’s wonderful Jurassic coast. The thing I like most about this part of the country is the enormous variety of locations often just a few minutes apart.  From towering cliffs to beautiful horse shoe shaped bays I think Dorset has a lot to offer.

I once again had a lovely group of photographers attending the course. We started off at Portland Bill where the main emphasis was controlling depth of field alongside creating dynamic compositions.  Controlling exposure and reading the histogram was also an important part of the morning’s tuition.

After an excellent Dorset lunch the afternoon took us to a less visited cove called Osmington Mills. I love it here because not only do you have great coastal scenes to photograph there’s also an excellent little waterfall. Ideal for practicing the creative use of shutter speeds.

We finished off with a sunset shoot at Portland Bill and photographed into the evening making use of the blue light of dusk.

Day two involved an early start, sunrise at Corfe castle. I love to see Corfe castle silhouetted against a dawn sky. After a successful shoot it was off to a well earned  breakfast. After breakfast it was off to Lulworth Cove which is always a pleasure to visit and a great place to create a digital panoramic which was the next task for everyone to have a go at.

It’s probably not exaggerated to say that Durdle Door is a world famous location. Even though it’s been photographed many times before there’s always another angle to look for. It’s a case of looking for your own personal perspective of a much photographed subject which is something I’m always keen to encourage.

So two days of fantastic scenery, great weather and company made for a very successful course.
