Essex Photography Course

Essex-based Photography Workshop Gives You the Opportunity to Witness Fine Scenery and Enhance Your skills as a Photographer

This full-day photography course (over seven hours of tuition) in Essex features one of the most picturesque parts of the county. We start at Baddow lock which has a fine mill house and weir. The weir is excellent for practicing creative use of shutter speeds. It’s then along the Chelmer to Paper Mill lock for reflection shots and canal boats. We finish the course at Heybridge Basin which has a different feel entirely as the river is now a tidal estuary. The day begins with all course attendees meeting at a pre-arranged point.  Transport between the different photographic locations is not included but Steve is happy to car-share if you wish.  He will be driving a seven-seater people carrier.  However, if you prefer to use your own car throughout the day, the photographic locations are close to each other and this does not involve driving long distances.

MEETING POINT free car park at South Woodham Ferrers Essex Postcode CM3 5DX. From here we will visit a number of close by locations.

My photography workshops are suitable for all levels of photographer, from complete beginners through to the more experienced photographer. Course numbers are limited to five participants which allows plenty of time for one-to-one photography tuition. In other words, I can tailor the course to the individual. If you are a beginner and want to know how to use your digital camera taking you beyond the basics, that’s fine. If you’re a more experienced photographer, we will explore more advanced techniques.

Many subjects are covered during this training course such as: how to use camera controls and menus, creative use of depth of field and shutter speed, auto focus modes, filter use, white balance, exposure modes, exposure histogram, fill flash, composition and the use of light and colour. Some teaching will be carried out in a group and some on a one-to-one basis.

Apart from learning the technical side of photography a big part of this course is helping you to “develop your photographer’s eye” so you have the confidence and knowledge to take better pictures.

Although the course is predominantly landscape photography, all the skills you have been taught are easily transferable to other genres of photography such as portraiture, wildlife and nature, sports, travel and architectural photography.

My photography programs are designed to be relaxed, informal and fun. I think we all learn photography more successfully if we are enjoying what we are doing and not feeling under pressure. I also make sure that there is always time for you to ask questions. This is also an important part of my training workshops.

Once the course is finished each student will receive a full set of notes covering all the course content. I think the notes are really important because you can refer back to them long after the course has been completed. You are also welcome to email me a selection of images taken on during the course for an expert critique.

You don’t need any specialist camera equipment for this course; your regular camera will be fine. A tripod would be useful but don’t worry if you don’t have one because we have a number of tripods that we’re happy to lend to students for the duration of the course.

Student testimonial from this course: Thank you Steve, for a great day’s shooting in the Chelmer Valley. I particularly enjoyed the way you talked about a particular aspect of photography and then took us to an ideal location where we were able to try to capture those ideas on camera. It was the first time for me in that part of the country, but an area I will try to return to”. Mike Burt: Chelmer Valley, Essex photography course
